What Is AI, Really? A Plain-English Start

By Debi O'Hearn, DNP, RN 3 min read

You've probably heard about AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. But what are they, really?

Think of an AI assistant as a very well-read helper. It has learned from huge amounts of text, so it can answer questions, write, summarize, and explain things in plain language. You talk to it the same way you'd text a friend.

What AI is good at:

  • Explaining confusing topics simply
  • Drafting emails, letters, and lists
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Summarizing long articles or documents

What AI is not:

  • It's not always right. It can sound confident and still be wrong.
  • It's not a person. It doesn't know you unless you tell it.
  • It's not a replacement for your doctor, lawyer, or financial advisor.

Try this today

Open a free AI tool and type: "Explain how AI works like I'm brand new to technology." Then ask a follow-up question. That's it. You're using AI.
