How to Spot an AI Scam

By Debi O'Hearn, DNP, RN 4 min read

Scammers are using AI too. They can write convincing emails, create fake videos, and even copy a loved one's voice. Here's how to protect yourself.

Warning signs:

  • Urgency. "Act now or your account will be closed." Real companies rarely rush you.
  • Requests for money or gift cards. Especially from someone "in trouble."
  • A familiar voice asking for help. AI can copy voices from short video clips online.
  • Too-good-to-be-true offers. Free prizes, big returns, or miracle products.

Simple ways to stay safe:

  • Pick a family code word. If someone calls in an emergency, ask for it.
  • Hang up and call back using a number you already know.
  • Never share passwords or codes sent to your phone.
  • Slow down. Scams depend on panic. A pause is your best defense.

Bonus tip

You can paste a suspicious email into an AI tool and ask, "Does this look like a scam? Why?" It's a great second opinion.
